Tamoxifen is a hormone therapy drug, a selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM), used to treat and prevent estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer in women and men by blocking estrogen's effects in breast tissue. It works like an estrogen blocker in the breast but acts like estrogen in other tissues, strengthening bones and lowering cholesterol in postmenopausal women, while causing menopause-like side effects (hot flashes, dryness). It's taken as a tablet and helps stop cancer cells from growing, but carries risks like blood clots and uterine cancer with long-term use.
